Asia had a strong showing, with 16 entries from cities such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, and Tokyo.
It’s official: London now boasts the top two drinking dens in the world, according to the latest annual list of the World’s 50 Best Bars. Connaught Bar at its namesake Mayfair hotel retained its first-place title from last year, while Tayēr + Elementary on Old Street climbed from fifth to second. Europe dominated the uppermost echelon of the rankings, taking out four of the top five entries: Third place went Barcelona’s Paradiso, The Clumsies in Athens was fourth, while Buenos Aires speakeasy Florería Atlántico came in at fifth.
Organized by William Reed Business Media, the awards rely on members of The World’s 50 Best Bar Academy, whose 600 bar industry experts voted between March 2020 and September 2021. This year’s selection reflects an increasingly diverse cocktail scene: places from 17 countries are represented in the top 50, including 18 new entries. The highest-ranked of these is Mexico City’s members-only venue Hanky Panky, number 12 on the list.
Crowned the Best Bar in Asia, Hong Kong’s Coa climbed one spot to 7th place. This Mexican-inspired spot helmed by agave evangelist Jay Khan has been a hit since it first opened its doors in 2017; Coa also took top honors at the latest Asia’s 50 Best Bars awards back in May. The two other Hong Kong bars featured on the list were new entry Darkside (49) at Kowloon’s Rosewood hotel and Quinary (50).
Singaporeans can be proud that their city had the most entries in the global top 50, with no less than six bars. Jigger & Pony, the runner-up this year in the Asia-only rankings, came in at ninth overall, while Manhattan and Atlas were No. 15 and No. 16 respectively. New entry No Sleep Club ranked 26th; MO Bar at the Mandarin Oriental hotel debuted on the list at No. 36; and Tippling Club was awarded 43rd place.
Elsewhere in the region, four more Asian cities were represented. Tokyo’s The SG Club, which came in third in the Asia’s 50 Best Bars list, was ranked 18th; Shinjuku drinking den Bar Benfiddich took the 32nd spot. A trio of Shanghai bars — Sober Company (39), Epic (41), and Union Trading Company (48) — also made the cut. Seoul’s sole entry was Charles H. (42) at the Four Seasons hotel, while Sidecar in New Delhi made its debut at No. 47.
