Fans of acclaimed architect and designer Bill Bensley have even more reason to check in to the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort on their next trip to central Vietnam. The property’s latest addition is the Bensley Outsider Gallery, which showcases original works of art created by the man himself. While he is known for creating a slew of notable hotels around Asia — including the InterContinental Danang — Bill Bensley took up painting just three years ago. The new gallery’s name, Outsider, reflects his feeling that he is not a classically trained artist, and how he considers himself an outsider in the art world. But Bensley’s talent as a painter is clear for all to see: his works are characterized by an exuberant Fauvist style, with bright, vivid colors and a touch of humor.

“Bill Bensley has enjoyed a long relationship with our resort; he designed it and continues to do so as we change and evolve,” said Seif Hamdy, the resort’s general manager, in a statement. “The Bensley Outsider Gallery is a fantastic opportunity to showcase his artworks to our guests and the public. We are proud to house his only gallery in Vietnam; this adds another exceptional new experience for our guests — one of a number that we will be introducing in the coming year.”

Occupying a naturally lit pavilion in a cobblestone courtyard on the InterContinental’s Sky Level, the Bensley Outsider Gallery will be accessible to in-house guests and general visitors alike. The space displays 50 of his prints and paintings, and viewers can embark on a self-guided audiovisual tour by scanning QR codes beside each piece of art, linking to YouTube videos that explain their backstories.

And if you want to take home a special souvenir, all featured artworks are available for purchase at a starting price of US$250. In accordance with Bensley’s wishes, all proceeds will be donated to environmental charities, including those that combat poaching in Southeast Asia and are actively involved in efforts to end the illegal wildlife trade.

The Bensley Outsider Gallery will be officially unveiled upon the reopening of InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, once conditions allow. Opening hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesdays through Sundays, and no bookings or appointments are necessary to make a visit.
