Avani Hotels & Resorts, the fast-growing sister brand of Anantara, has just opened a second outpost in the southern Thai province of Krabi. The launch of this rebranded and newly renovated property above Koh Lanta’s western shore follows the 2020 debut of Avani Ao Nang Cliff Krabi Resort. A scenic 90-minute journey (including a 15-minute ferry ride) south from Krabi International Airport, Avani+ Koh Lanta Resort spreads over a wooded peninsula overlooking the Andaman Sea and its own private beach.

Bangkok-based studio PIA looked to the multicultural heritage of Lanta Old Town for the resort’s redesign. Originally a “sea gypsy” village, the laidback settlement on the island’s eastern coast drew Thai-Muslim fishermen and Chinese merchants, and thrived for a time as a trading port connecting Krabi with Penang and Singapore. The 92 revamped guest rooms, suites, and pool villas at Avani+ Koh Lanta incorporate Chinese floor tiles and wallpaper with hand-drawn motifs found in Malay woodcarving.

Measuring in at 50 square meters, the all-new Avani rooms come in three categories: pool view, pool access, and sea view rooms. All feature semi-outdoor seating areas with different configurations — for instance, Avani Sea View rooms have a large terrace styled as a sala (pavilion). The pool villas are more than double the size and come with king beds, spacious bathrooms, as well as a private patio accessed through folding glass doors. At the top of the line is the two-bedroom Grand Ocean Residence ensconced in its own gardens; travelers bedding down in the cliff-top 235-square-meter accommodation will have the services of a dedicated villa host at their disposal. They’ll also find a living room, a dining area, and a fully equipped kitchenette, alongside a sundeck and private lap pool with a submerged seating area.

Guests at Avani+ Koh Lanta have a trio of dining and drinking spots to choose from. Pantry by Avani is a café-style deli that serves freshly brewed coffee, pastries, salads, and sandwiches. The Cliff, its main poolside restaurant, dishes out Thai and international fare prepared with ocean-fresh seafood sourced from the local fishing villages and ingredients found at the island’s organic market. Perched along the rocky shoreline, the Reggae Bar is just the place for couples to enjoy sundowners, light bites, and live entertainment while soaking up the front-row views of the Andaman Sea.

Recreational facilities elsewhere on the property include the AvaniFit Gym. Stocked with the latest exercise equipment, the fitness center offers a boot-camp program ideal for those looking to stay in shape while on holiday; private personal training sessions are also available on request. After a day of island-hopping, guests can unwind at AvaniSpa through treatments like the Avani Signature Touch, which combines an oil massage with stretching techniques to relieve muscle tension in the shoulder, arms, and upper body. Parents get extra downtime thanks to the presence of a Kids’ Club. Open to children aged between four and 12 years old, AvaniKids keeps the little ones engaged through a daily program of activities designed to pique their curiosity.
