Southeast Asia–based aviation enthusiasts interested in the business side of the industry may want to look out for the new commemorative volume by Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), which comes packed with untold stories from MAS. The carrier started out back in 1930s Singapore as Malayan Airways Limited, before morphing into a regional airline in 1972, when it began a rapid international expansion from its new home base in Kuala Lumpur.

Rising to a New Horizon: A New Journey Begins highlights Malaysia Airlines’ history and offers rare insights into its people, captured through curated images and moments from the company’s beginnings through to the present day. Group Chief Executive Officer, Captain Izham Ismail, said in a statement, “This book is an ode to the beloved carrier that all of us, from across Malaysia and the world have helped to build and sustain over the years.”

Presented in seven chapters, the book also narrates MAG’s transformational journey as it navigated more recent headwinds, and the changes made in aspects such as organizational culture. The Covid-19 pandemic has forced Malaysia’s flag carrier to undergo a major restructuring process to reset its balance sheet. MAG has managed to bring down costs without letting go of staff, while reducing its full-year net loss for 2021 by 60 percent on the back of strong cargo revenue performance. According to the group, Rising to a New Horizon: A New Journey Begins gives readers a glimpse of how Malaysia Airlines is gearing up for the future by focusing on performance, digitalization, and sustainability.
