IHG Hotels & Resorts has just opened the very first outpost in Australia under its boutique Hotel Indigo brand. Occupying the site of a former textile factory in the heart of the South Australian state capital, Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets stands out for a “Raw and Refined” design ethos that pays tribute to the quirks of the surrounding neighborhood and Adelaide itself.

The 145-room property is located steps away from Adelaide Central Market, whose brick archways are mimicked in the public spaces of the hotel. Further visual interest is added through murals by well-known Australian contemporary artists such as Tristan Kerr and a rotating selection of artworks. Meanwhile, locally inspired design touches in the guest rooms and suites include copper fixtures — a nod to South Australia’s copper-mining heritage — contemporary light wood furnishings, and colorful rugs that depict the tessellated tiles often seen in traditional Adelaide homes. The annual Adelaide Festival provides inspiration for specially commissioned poster art and murals behind the king-size beds; floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample natural light and frame vistas of the city.

Bathrooms are equipped with two-head rain showers and bath amenities from the eco-conscious Biology brand. The 25 suites also feature espresso machines and minibars stocked with wattleseed Negroni from Lot 100 in the Adelaide Hills and Floral as Hell Gin by local distiller Blend Etiquette, as well as snacks like the Inch Licorice Block from Adelaide-based Melba’s Chocolates.

Given the exceptional quality of South Australian produce, drinking and dining outlets at the hotel put a strong emphasis on local ingredients and makers. Perched on the 16th floor, Merrymaker is the highest rooftop bar in the city, offering panoramic views of the CBD and the Adelaide Hills while spotlighting fresh regional produce. The raw food–focused venue dishes up a selection of local seafood, charcuterie, and cheeses from an open kitchen; its drinks list includes more than 25 award-winning gins and a wide range of South Australian wines and craft beers.

Downstairs, ground-floor all-day restaurant Market & Meander tempts patrons with items from a globe-trotting menu: think slow-cooked smoked brisket and free-range chicken prepared on a South American–style parrilla grill. The color scheme of the eatery was inspired by the late and great former South Australian Premier Don Dunstan, a socially progressive leader who was also known for wearing flamboyant pink shorts.

On-site recreational facilities at Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets include a 24-hour gym and 13-meter outdoor infinity pool. Smaller-scale events can be hosted in two boardroom-style meeting rooms as well as the mezzanine level and rooftop.

The coming years will see the Hotel Indigo brand expanding across Australasia, with future openings in Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.
