It’s not just the recent debut of SkyHelix Sentosa, a rotating open-air gondola, that is tempting Singapore-based travelers to revisit Sentosa Island and try something new. Better known for its range of hotels across the Asia-Pacific region, the Shangri-La Group has announced the creation of Palawan Sands, its very first standalone lifestyle and entertainment precinct. The beach playground is set to open in the second quarter of 2023, and one of its main draws will be HyperDrive, Southeast Asia’s sole gamified electric Go-Kart circuit. Thrill-seekers can barrel down a three-level circuit in a race that incorporates elements of virtual gaming: drivers will get to use an array of “special powers” to sabotage their competitors or give themselves a turbo-charge, bringing the Go-Karting experience to a whole new level.

The complex will also feature two beach clubs catering to different audiences. Beside the structure housing HyperDrive, the young and young-at-heart can splash out at a sandcastle-themed beach club that has a wet play area and several lagoon pools. Farther along the sand, the more grown-up +Twelve (plus twelve) will have a swim-up bar in the main pool as well as 12 terraced private cabanas, each with their own infinity-edge plunge pool to make the most of sunsets over the Singapore Strait.

Other attractions at Palawan Sands include UltraGolf, an 18-hole mini golf course adjacent to the family-friendly beach club, and HydroDash, a floating obstacle course that has been operating since July 2020. The latest visuals suggest that there’ll be food trucks on the sand and in a breezy beachside dining area; several brick-and-mortar stalls are likely to be added as well. More details on the culinary lineup will be released by Shangri-La closer to the opening.

HyperDrive will be Southeast Asia’s first gamified electric Go-Kart circuit.
