SIA Passengers from These Cities Can Transit at Changi

46 destinations across the Singapore Airlines Group network are now listed as approved points of departure.

Since Singapore’s Civil Aviation Authority lifted its ban on transits in early June, the SIA Group has been gradually restoring Changi Airport’s role as an important stopover point for intercontinental travelers. Restrictions were first eased for passengers flying from Australia and New Zealand, and the scheme was gradually expanded to cover seven destinations in Asia, before being extended to Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, and London. Eventually, four other European cities—Barcelona, Paris, Zürich, and Milan—also became approved points of departure for transit passengers.

Recent weeks have seen at least 10 destinations around the world added to the list of eligible cities. In Mainland China, the policy now covers Shenzhen and Tianjin. Taiwan’s second city of Kaohsiung also made the cut, along with Fukuoka in Japan, Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei), and Da Nang in central Vietnam. Male, the Maldivian capital, will become the latest approved point of departure when SilkAir resumes regular passenger services there early next month. Outside of Asia, passengers on SIA’s nonstop flights from Johannesburg, Los Angeles, and New York (JFK) are free to transit in Singapore.

Travelers flying SIA Group carriers (Singapore Airlines, SilkAir, and Scoot) from the aforementioned cities can now connect in Changi to any destination within the group’s global network, except for those in mainland China. That means it is possible to buy return tickets between London and Sydney via Singapore, as both are approved places for transit.

Singapore Airlines also says these cities must be the first point of departure, except in cases where the first leg of the journey is on a domestic route, or if one is leaving from a nation within the Schengen area to connect to an SIA flight departing from another Schengen country. Passengers are advised to book the whole journey on one ticket, and must make sure they meet the entry requirements at their final destination. So far, transfers at Changi are only allowed between airlines within the SIA Group.

It’s worth noting that the total layover time in Singapore should not exceed 48 hours. Those who face a longer stopover can book a room at Aerotel Singapore in Changi Airport Terminal 1. Arriving passengers with a hotel reservation will be ushered to a dedicated transit holding area for verification checks, and ground staff will then guide them to the Aerotel, where they must remain throughout their stay. After checkout, travelers will be escorted to a waiting area before boarding their connecting flight.
