SIA Passengers from These Cities Can Transit at Changi

Recent agreements signed with five foreign carriers, including Garuda Indonesia and Lufthansa, extend the same privilege to their customers.

Since Singapore’s Civil Aviation Authority lifted its ban on transits in the middle of last year, the SIA Group has been gradually restoring Changi Airport’s role as an important stopover point for intercontinental travelers. Recent weeks have seen the addition of another 13 cities around the world as eligible points of departure. Within Southeast Asia, these include Manila, Phuket, and Yangon, while three new South Asian cities have also made the list, namely Colombo, Dhaka, and Kathmandu. Over in East Asia, eligible points of origin extend to Nagoya as well as the Chinese cities of Wuhan and Zhengzhou. Farther afield, Dubai, Moscow, Munich, and San Francisco have also been added to the list.

Tokyo Haneda will become an approved point of departure from March 2, 2021, when SIA resumes regular flights on Airbus A350-900 aircraft. Flown on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, the outbound service will depart from Singapore at 2:05 p.m. and touch down in Haneda at 9:40 p.m. local time, after six and a half hours in the air. Meanwhile, the return journey is slightly longer at seven hours 20 minutes, with the plane taking off from Haneda at 10:55 p.m. to arrive back in Changi at 5:15 a.m. the next morning.

SIA has also taken the step of signing interline agreements with Air France, Garuda Indonesia, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, and Swiss International Air Lines, allowing their customers to fly to Changi from any of the approved points of departure and then continue their journeys on SIA Group flights.

Notably, four cities that were previously included have been struck off the list for various reasons. London and Johannesburg were dropped to keep out new coronavirus variants; passengers with a travel history to the United Kingdom or South Africa within the previous 14 days are currently barred from transiting through Singapore. Closer to home, Da Nang, which was formerly served by SilkAir, has been cut, as has Kaohsiung (since Scoot no longer flies here). These latest changes bring the number of eligible cities for SIA Group transit flights through Changi to 56.
