If you’re a member of Singapore Airlines’ (SIA) Krisflyer loyalty program, you’ll soon be able to use a digital wallet app when shopping with your accumulated miles.

Touted as a “world first” by the airline, this blockchain-based airline loyalty digital wallet will be launched within the next six months after successful trials with Microsoft and KPMG Digital Village.

For the uninitiated, blockchain is a technology which uses cryptography, originally developed for the digital currency Bitcoin, to create a type of digital ledger.

SIA’s CEO Goh Choon Phong said: “This groundbreaking development in which we will be using blockchain technology to ‘digitalize’ Krisflyer miles is a demonstration of the investment we are making to significantly enhance the digital side of our business for the benefit of our customers.”

This move is also aligned with the airline’s recently unveiled Digital Innovation Blueprint, which outlines its aim to become the “the leading digital airline in the world.”
