Listen up, avid skiers — the world’s largest snow and ski resort is currently being built in Shanghai.

Developed by Dubai-based retail giant Majid Al Futtaim (the company behind Ski Dubai, the Middle East’s first indoor ski slope), the snow park will take up 90,000 square meters of space.

Called Wintastar Shanghai, the complex will boast three ski slopes with differing gradients, with one described as “Olympic standard for training”, as well as 25 non-ski activities.

Located in the Pudong New Area of the city, the resort will be the Dubai retailer’s first move into leisure and entertainment outside of the Middle East and North Africa. This also follows Ski Dubai being voted “World’s Best Indoor Ski Resort” in 2017 at the World Ski Awards.

In light of the Winter Olympics being hosted by Beijing in 2022, the world’s most populous nation is trying to raise its profile in the arena of winter sports.

According to a 2017 CNN report, only 12.1 million Chinese people have tried skiing at least once, which is less than one percent of the population.

While an estimated completion date for this new resort has not been announced, the Chinese government hopes that it will encourage locals to take up winter sports when it eventually opens.

Aside from ski facilities, guests can also look forward to an ice hotel, as well as a Viking-themed water park.
