The WTA Finals Move to Singapore

Women's tennis superstars such as Venus Williams, who won the Dubai Open earlier this year, will compete on the Sports Hub's brand new courts.
Singapore will host the tournament for the next five years.

Now that it’s finally open, the 35-hectare Singapore Sports Hub complex looks set to get plenty of use in the coming months, with everything from football games, indie-rock concerts, and darts championships on the agenda. Of particular note is the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global (Oct. 17–26), which has moved to Singapore for the next five years from its previous host city of Istanbul. The WTA’s season-ending event will see the biggest names in women’s tennis—Li Na, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, et al.—battle it out for a record prize purse of US$6.5 million. And the reward for spectators? A level of court craft never seen before in the city-state. —David Tse
