What Economy Class Could Look Like After COVID-19

Italian design firm Aviointeriors has introduced two new seat designs meant for post-COVID-19 travel.

Protective shields on the seats.

The current COVID-19 pandemic could drastically change the way we fly, especially when it comes to economy-class cabins. Airlines globally have begun to implement new measures such as blocking out the middle seats, so as to maintain social distancing.

In light of this, Italian design firm Aviointeriors has unveiled two new seat designs meant for post-COVID-19 travel. These seats are designed to ensure a reasonable distance between passengers on planes without losing seating capacity for the carrier.

Travelers on the aisle and window seats will face the direction of travel.

One of the two designs by the firm features a backward-facing middle seat and plastic shields partially covering all seats. Called Janus, after the double-faced Roman god, travelers on the aisle and window seats will face the direction of travel. Meant as a protective barrier for passengers, these shields help to prevent “breath propagation to occupants of adjacent seats.”

The firm, which specializes in designing aircraft cabin interiors and passenger seats, said: “Each passenger has his own space isolated from others, even from people who walk through the aisle.”

Glassafe, a shield that can be added to each seat on a plane to create a barrier between passengers.

The other seat design features the Glassafe, a shield that can be added to each seat on a plane to create a barrier between passengers. These shields can be easily attached and removed so that airlines do not have to change the cabin interior of the aircraft. According to Aviointeriors, this transparent shield could “reduce the probability of contamination by viruses.”
