Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, Bali

Launched in 2004 after the first Bali bombing, the annual Ubud Writers & Readers Festival brings together diverse international voices and is the main project of the not-for-profit foundation Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati. In 2011 the event will be held Oct. 5-9, with a theme of “cultivate the land within.” Among the attending authors is Alexander McCall Smith, the mind behind the hugely successful “No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” series. Cultural events are also on offer, like a guided walk through the herb garden at Casaluna Restaurant highlighting the healing properties of various local plants.
