The Luxe List 2009, China: Langham Yangtze Shanghai Hotel

Located a stone’s throw from People’s Square, this petite property occupies a tiered 1930s Art Deco landmark that was once home to the Yangtze Hotel. In its current incarnation, the Langham group’s first foray in mainland China has returned the building to much of its former glory, filling the 96 rooms with bold patterns and period furnishings. For a small hotel, the restaurant options are plentiful, including Japanese, Italian, and Cantonese. Don’t miss out on the “Absolutely Shanghaied” cocktail in the bar, where leather sofas sit under a stained-glass atrium (740 Hankou Lu; 86-21/6080-0800;; doubles from US$500).
