It’s been more than a decade since Banyan Tree last managed a resort in Bali—but judging from the looks of the new Banyan Tree Ungasan (62-361/ 300-7000;; doubles from US$780), the Singapore-based hotel group is making up for lost time, and then some. Opening in mid-December on Bali’s southern Bukit Peninsula, the cliff-hugging property has 73 pool villas, almost all with views of an unbroken expanse of sea. Guest quarters are chic and spacious, with pitched ceilings, acres of marble and wood, and private gardens set around 10-meter-long infinity pools. Like its sister properties around the region, this Banyan Tree aims to excel in its wellness offerings: the spa taps the ancient healing traditions of Indonesia in a menu spanning jamu herbal drinks to homegrown body scrubs. –Sari Wijaya
