There is so much to admire at the St. Regis Bali that it’s easy to overlook its showier aspects (the sunset fire dances come to mind here). Set across nine flamboyantly landscaped hectares, the resort comprises a block of 97 suites and—considerably nicer—24 villas, some set above the beach, others around a winding 3,668-square-meter lagoon pool. The 24-hour butler service is as smooth as you would expect from a St. Regis, and the food is of the highest order, whether it be chef Oscar Perez’s seafood offerings at the beachfront Kayuputi restaurant, takeaway goodies and sandwiches at the gourmet deli, or the breakfast buffet at Boneka—surely the island’s best first meal of the day. Visits to the serene Remède Spa and private access to the neighboring Bali Golf & Country Club round out the list of diversions (62-361/847-8111; stregisbali.com; doubles from US$750).
