Bali: a ‘Healing Village’ Spa Near Ubud

There’s no shortage of spas in Bali, but none mine the island’s rich tradition of healing and sacred arts like the Fivelements Puri Ahimsa (62-361/469-206; fivelements.org). This residential healing center, set on a verdant riverside plot close to Ubud, is inspired by Balinese principles of harmony both in its design and its approach to wellness. Its airy, curvilinear pavilions are constructed from bamboo with coconut wood and reclaimed teak. Five cozy bamboo huts give onto the river, with bathtubs on verandas just meters from its banks; wastewater is treated and reused to feed the gardens.

But the focal point is the “healing village” where local masters like Agung, a reflexology and acupressure specialist with 26 years experience, perform transformative treatments. There are two movement spaces for practices like yoga and aikido, pools for aquatic therapy, and a beauty center that uses organic masks and lotions cooked up in the on-site laboratory. And come mealtime, expect delicious living foods that combine macrobiotic, Ayurvedic, and Balinese elements. –Johnny Langenheim
