With outposts in Zanzibar and Mauritius, Singapore’s The Residence Hotels group knows a thing or two about Indian Ocean chic. Its latest property, The Residence Maldives (960/682-0088; doubles from US$1,140), which opened on April 9, translates the brand’s elegantly restrained aesthetic into a 94-villa hideaway in the Huvadhoo Atoll, where thatch-roofed accommodations hover over a lagoon or take prime position on the beach. Though the resort is situated less than one degree north of the equator, its two restaurants and poolside bar present food from around the globe, while French techniques mingle with Asian elements at the Maldives’ first Clarins spa. –David Tse
