The age of 30 was a daunting milestone for Georgina Koh and Chiewling Tan, bringing about a mild existential crisis. After working for years in advertising and marketing the best-friend duo decided they wanted to start a project that they would truly be proud of, thus the shop Nana & Bird was born. Borrowing their childhood nicknames, Nana & Bird started as a pop-up store in Georgina’s apartment in April 2010 before the girls thought retail space was an option. Soon word spread of the pop-up store with feminine frocks and killer jewelry meaning a weekend offering could no longer satisfy the masses. Nana & Bird now occupies a shared space just off the Yong Siak main drive that the two claim a Tiong Bahru grandma used to inhabit. The ever-changing collection houses close to 20 brands, drawing on Singaporean, Australian, American, and European designers. The deftly selected racks aim to create a “personal shopping” experience, choosing clothes for a lady with a taste for romantic Aijek threads and raw Edge of Ember jewelry. The store has been so successful that a second concept store popped up just last year named Two-o-ri and a new Nana & Bird location opened just last month on Eng Hoon Street. All the success has the girls rethinking their day jobs.
