Some of us (including yours truly) are getting older than we think we should. During a recent stop in Bangkok I decided to do something about this unjust state of affairs, visiting the 36th floor of the InterContinental Bangkok to try the Spa InterContinental’s signature Reborn Apple Stem Cell Facial treatment. Extracted from a feisty strain of apple indigenous to Switzerland (with the highly scientific sounding name Uttwiler Spaetlauber but less impressive translation of ‘late to get leaves of Uttwil’), the cells have been cultivated to get under your skin and help retain its elasticity by encouraging epidermal stem-cell activity. After being told the apples can be kept for months without showing signs of withering, I was ready for a miracle.
After the obligatory pre-facial massage (not necessary for maintaining your looks but nevertheless worthwhile), I was ready to become a new, more desirable woman. (I’m radiant by nature, of course, but it can’t hurt to be even more so.) The treatment, using German skincare products from Biodroga, began with makeup removal and cleansing, followed by a very gentle scrub and massage. The hour saw my face smothered in numerous sweet-scented serums and I can only presume one of them contained the all-powerful apple stem cells.
So what about the result? The therapist seemed very happy with my new face, and I must admit my skin did feel super hydrated and supple. This time, it seems, my trust in the wonders of nature (and technology) paid off. But even more significantly, it was nice to have somebody other than myself so concerned with my appearance … even if for only an hour. — Bennita Swift
