The Luxe List 2010, Australia: The Blackman, Melbourne

The luminous colors and sense of wonder that infuse Australian painter Charles Blackman’s Schoolgirl and Alice in Wonderland series have been translated into spatial form at this namesake lodgings. The third Art Series Hotel to open in Melbourne this past year—the other two are named for and feature art by Adam Cullen and John Olsen, respectively—is located just outside the city center, making it well placed for both business or leisure travelers. Like its sibling hotels, The Blackman offers a quirky blend of culture and comfort; each of its 209 rooms features archival Blackman prints, an in-house art channel, a library of art tomes, and splashes of gemstone-bright color, as well as a kitchenette and a balcony overlooking either the city or one of Melbourne’s expansive parks. Guests wanting to know more about Blackman’s oeuvre can book a tour with Jane O’Neill, the resident curator, and then stroll up the road to the National Gallery of Victoria.
