Winter resorts can leave a lot to be desired in terms of design. Not so this alpine gem, set above the Tawonga Valley at Falls Creek, north of Melbourne. Australian design firm Hecker Phelan & Guthrie has fitted out the lodge’s six apartments in classic Scandinavian style—think oak floors, wood paneling, and mid-century furniture, all finished in a crisp palette of charcoal, white, and pale gray. Each unit has a private ski drying room; some feature heated balconies and hot tubs. While at its best in winter, there’s plenty here to keep you entertained out of season, including hiking, mountain biking, and dozens of good restaurants and bars in Falls Creek village (7 Snowgums Ln.; 61-433/650-784; fjall.com.au; apartments from US$1,116 for two nights).
