Adopting the name “Project Sesame” to maintain utmost secrecy according to the Wall Street Journal, Starwood Hotels & Resorts has unveiled its latest technological innovation planned for the hotel group. Slated for roll-out in small test batches this year, Starwood will install keyless doors and begin mobile check-in accessible with patrons’ smartphones using the Starwood Preferred Guest application. Guests can use their phones to check-in without stopping at the front desk, swiping a credit card, or picking up a plastic key. The Bluetooth enabled lock, made in partnership with Swedish lock maker Assa Abloy, can unlock doors with a tap or twist of a phone near the battery-powered sensor. In the next three months the technology will be available at Aloft Harlem and Cupertino aligning with the tech savvy leanings of the locations’ clientele. If tests are successful the technology could be used in Aloft and W properties in 2015.
