Jakarta, June 12, 2014 – DestinAsian magazine has been honored this year with a Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) Award for Excellence in Lifestyle Coverage. The accolade marks the 13th time the regional travel publication has been recognized by SOPA at its annual Awards for Editorial Excellence, and brings the number of regional and international awards garnered by the magazine since its launch in 2001 to more than 40.

“We are ecstatic to have been recognized in a field of such distinguished publications and look forward to continuing DestinAsian’s winning legacy,” said publisher Ronald Liem.

This year, a record number of entries from across Asia—676 nominated works—competed in 18 categories for the coveted SOPA awards. A panel of more than 100 international judges including journalists, editors, and columnists from leading publications as well as notable academics selected the winners.

DestinAsian was recognized for the entry of four feature-length editorial stories: “A New Season for Sumba” by Johnny Langenheim, “Kingdom in the Clouds” by Christopher Hill, “On Safari in Sri Lanka” by Cynthia Rosenfeld, and “Jakarta Modern” by Lawrence Osborne.

Said Christopher Hill, the magazine’s editor in chief, “Maintaining DestinAsian’s position as the region’s leading luxury travel magazine has taken a fair amount of commitment and energy by everyone on the team, including of course our unfailingly dedicated contributors. At a time when traditional publishing faces increasing pressure from alternate media, it’s gratifying to know that those efforts aren’t going unrecognized.”

SOPA judges attributed DestinAsian’s win to “excellent photography” and “engaging story lines” that propelled the feature stories.
