Long known for its legendary winter powder, Niseko transforms each summer into a quieter, greener, intimate destination.

It’s no secret that <a href="https://destinasian.com/editorial/niseko-asias-premier-ski-town">Niseko </a>in winter is a spectacle: four resorts stitched across Mount Annupuri, their legendary powder drawing ski pilgrims from acros the world. During the high season, the population of “the second Australia” triples. Lift queues snake through base lodges, and tables at the best restaurants—like <a href="https://www.sushiazabu-niseko.com/?destinasian">Sushi Azabu</a> and beloved yakitori joint <a href="http://nisekobangbang.com/en/?destinasian">Bang Bang</a>—are booked months out. The mood, like the snowfall, is intense.
But in summer? The energy changes entirely. Niseko exhales.
Once the last ski lift clicks to a halt in May, the mountains turn green, hotel rates drop by up to 50 per cent, and the same chefs and guides who were slammed all winter have time to talk. The wildflower-filled hiking trails are empty, and there’s space to breathe, wander, and cast a line. And increasingly, there are more reasons to visit. The <a href="https://www.nisekojazzfestival.com/?destinasian">Niseko Jazz Festival</a> returns in July, a popular, family-friendly event that’s become a mainstay in <a href="https://destinasian.com/update/why-setsu-niseko-is-hokkaidos-most-serene-summer-escape">Setsu Niseko’s</a> open-air courtyard in collaboration with the famed Blue Note Tokyo. What began as a niche gathering now draws talent from across Japan and beyond, with outdoor sets staged against Mount Yotei’s volcanic cone. Lavender fields and flower gardens bloom across Hanazono and Kutchan—turning the region into a riot of purples, yellows and crimson reds. 
The best part? You’ll have it nearly all to yourself.
<h2>Flying Through Hanazono: Asia’s Longest Zipline</h2>

In winter, <a href="https://hanazononiseko.com/en/summer/activities/zipline?destinasian">Hanazono Resort</a> is a tangle of terrain parks and lift queues. In summer, it’s all tranquil pine and birch and home to Asia’s longest zipline, an astonishing 1.7-kilometer flight through the forest canopy at speeds hitting 110km/h. 
Hiro, a cheerful Tokyo transplant and snowboarding enthusiast, is our guide. We begin with two modest warm-up lines before climbing to Mach 3, which launches from what feels like a ridiculously high wooden platform designed to shake confidence. The end point—a gray cube in the far distance—feels implausibly far.
Sensing my hesitation, Hiro nods reassuringly and says: “You’ll go on three,” before launching me at two. I’m mid-protest when the ground falls away and the forest starts to whip by in a blur of green. Any trepidation I felt is swiftly replaced by exhilaration, and the longer ride means a rare chance to actually enjoy the scenery. Even then, it’s over too fast, which is always the mark of a good ride.
<h3>Rafting the Shiribetsu</h3>

Fed by snowmelt from Mount Yotei, the Shiribetsu River is among Japan’s cleanest. Spring brings serious rapids; summer calms the rivers somewhat, but with still enough patches of white water to keep things interesting.
The most strenuous part of the experience, led by <a href="https://nacadventures.jp/en/?destinasian">Niseko Adventure Centre</a> is probably when you wrestle into your dry suit, which is cuffed tight at the neck, wrists, and ankles. Once kitted out, we follow simple commands from our impossibly chirpy guide, Megan, a Canadian who arrived to teach English in Asahikawa three years ago and never left. “Winter here has that great energy,” she says. “But summer is fantastic—it gets quiet and it’s just the Japanese here. And kids can go for these great summer camps, hiking, biking and rafting.” 
The river is certainly in peak form. The sky is a brilliant blue. Small waterfalls spill down cliffs. Trees filled with birdsong bend over the banks and the sun glints off the currents like thrown fistfuls of diamonds. At a mossy “jumping off point”, we’re encouraged to plunge straight into the river. I involuntarily swallow some of it, which tastes like liquid mountain air.
Floating down sunlit bends, we’re giddy with the beauty of it all “We’re just spoiled,” says Megan. “Summer in Niseko is such a great time to visit, and more people should know about it.”
<h4>Field to Pizza: Lunch at Green Farm Niseko</h4>

Just outside Hirafu, <a href="https://nisekogreenfarm.com/en?destinasian">Niseko Green Farm</a> is a working organic farm that turns lunch into a full sensory experience. Naru, its manager, has been farming organically here for 18 years, coaxing seasonal produce like tomatoes, white corn and potatoes from the short but intense Hokkaido summer, all without the use of synthetic chemical pesticides or fertilisers. 
“You can enjoy the original flavour of the vegetables,” he says, as we walk through neat rows from which sprout nubby fingers of green and purple asparagus. The shoots are in season, and I’m handed a basket and instructed to harvest my lunch—16 precious bi-coloured spears, sunwarmed and unexpectedly sweet when I sneak a bite.
Back at the outdoor pizza lab (housed in a Hobbit hole-like mound), we stretch dough by hand before topping it with the farm’s tomato sauce, potato, white corn and our asparagus. Logs of oak, pine and white birch fire the oven; minutes later, we eat in appreciative silence, with Mount Annupuri in the distance and the farm’s three snow-white goats (triplets, we’re told), awaiting our vegetable scraps.
<h5>Fly Fishing at Big Fight</h5>

Fly fishing at <a href="https://matsumoto--base-com.translate.goog/?_x_tr_sl=ja&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=ja&amp;_x_tr_pto=wapp?destinasian">Big Fight</a>’s scenic pond outside Niseko is a lesson in patience and precision. “Casting is very difficult, neh,” says our guide Yuji Yamaguchi, repositioning my grip. “You have to practice.”
Fly fishing, unlike bait fishing, uses a nearly weightless artificial fly designed to mimic a tiny insect on the water’s surface. It’s all in the wrist, and Yuji instructs me to “cast like a clock—start at twelve and stop at ten”. We practice on a large beginner-friendly pond, its mirror surface framed by forest. If you like, no bait is used; this is also catch and release, a gentle duel between you and the fish.
To my surprise, I land five in under an hour: a mix of rainbow and yamame, the easily spooked, smaller native trout. Yuji teaches me to distinguish male from female (the former have larger, more angular heads), before gently releasing them back into the crystal waters. While you can fly fish all year round in Niseko, summer, with its abundance of insects and resulting fish frenzy, is considered the best time.
<h6>Spirit of the Mountain: Gin at Niseko Distillery</h6>

Ten minutes from Hirafu, <a href="https://niseko-distillery.com/en/?destinasian">Niseko Distillery</a> is a low-slung larch structure designed with the kind of restraint that could only be Japanese. It has already won a Japan Good Design Award, but its real asset is water—snowmelt from the surrounding peaks, prized for its softness and purity.
Run by the fourth-generation Hakkaisan sake family and dominated by an impressive German-made copper hybrid still, the distillery produces small-batch gin and, soon, whisky. The botanicals, like lavender, peppermint, willow and yuzu, are all foraged or cultivated locally. Their award-winning flagship gin, <a href="https://niseko-distillery.com/en/product/ohoro-gin-2?destinasian">Ohoro</a> (meaning “to continue” in Ainu), is vapour-infused so delicately that a single short interaction with the botanical basket is enough to extract layers of aroma.
Their whisky, still in its infancy, rests in American white oak barrels made by Japan’s only independent cooper. There’s a shortage of local oak, so the barrels must be imported. We taste a “zero-year-old”—unaged and intensely spirit-forward. The gin, served with a sprig of wild lavender, is clean and herbaceous, with citrus and piney flavours. It’s like a taste of Niseko summer — fleeting but beautifully so. Reservations are required for guided tours, so plan ahead.
