On first glance, Los Angeles and Beijing may not appear to share much beyond the imagined boundaries of the Pacific Rim. But upon closer examination, the two cities share significant developmental arcs. Los Angeles has already faced issues currently plaguing Beijing, such as environmental woes and remaining relevant within the global landscape. The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art aims to create a conversation involving the two cities with its current The Los Angeles Project occupying its entire exhibition space from September 13 to November 9. Participating artists include Kathryn Andrews, Aaron Curry, Alex Israel, Matthew Monahan, Sterling Ruby, Ryan Trecartin, and Kaari Upson, all of whom live and work in Los Angeles. The UCCA exhibition is the first showing in China for many of the artists as well as the first time the city has been comprehensively presented in the region. The featured works, including murals and installations, reflect the diversity and dynamism of the Los Angeles’ culture.
