Overlooking the unbroken expanse of the Indian Ocean from a headland on Sri Lanka’s south coast, Cape Weligama debuts in October as the first world-class resort to open along this stunning shoreline in almost a decade. Its 40 airy villas and suites are designed by Thai architect Lek Bunnag and arranged in clusters named for historical personages such as Marco Polo and the great Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta, both of whom sailed past these craggy cliffs on winds that now ensure consistent breaks for surfers. Other offshore activities include wreck diving, whale watching, and game fishing. Back on land, a market-style fresh seafood eatery, stunning cliff-top lounge, and sushi bar confer dramatic panoramas while in-room spa treatments are infused with local teas courtesy of Dilmah, the Sri Lankan tea brand that owns the resort. –Cynthia Rosenfeld
