KLM announced that it would equip about 5,000 pilots and pursers with iPads after a pilot project showed that flight operations and customer service improved thanks to the device. Results from the pilot program showed that cabin crew members with iPads responded quicker and more efficiently to passenger requests, while pilots were able to make decisions more quickly because flight plans was shared earlier.

“Our customers greatly appreciate the personal service KLM offers on board,” said Peter Hartman, president-director at KLM, in a statement. “The iPad enables staff to offer passengers even more personal service and can, for instance, be used to update them more quickly on last-minute operational changes. Even in economically challenging times, it is very important to keep investing in our customers and personnel.”

The announcement was made soon after the FAA said it would reconsider its long-standing rules about personal-electronic-device usage on airplanes. KLM has said it aims to have iPads in the hands of all pilots and senior purser and cabin attendants by the fall.
