As ethical buzzwords such as “fair trade,” “green,” and “sustainable” get applied to an increasing number of products, it can become more and more difficult to verify these claims. But there is no question about the origins of the accessories, home decor, and jewelry on e-commerce site WE’VE BUILT, which features products made by artisans from around the world, many using locally sourced or recycled materials. Only after a 20-order quota has been met for a certain product does it go into production; a process that ensures consumer demand and cuts down on waste. After an item goes into production, buyers get periodic updates about the process, including behind-the-scenes videos of their items being made. Thanks to this transparency, buyers can now be confident about every aspect of their purchase.
Launched in September of this year, WE’VE BUILT is the creation of Eve Blossom, a former architect who spent time in Vietnam renovating colonial villas. But the site isn’t Blossom’s first foray into social enterprise, she is also the founder of Lulan Artisans, a sustainable textile business that now employs and fairly pays 650 artisans from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and India.
In an interview with Luxury in Progress, Blossom talked about the inspiration and motivation behind her crowd-sourcing commerce site: “In the future, we think manufacturing will change dramatically and the maker movement will continue to be a major change agent. WE’VE reflects the maker movement and how it helps establish a better way to produce with a transparent relationship chain, closer relationships and high design.”
