In a clever play on social media, Singapore Airlines built up the anticipation for the revealing of its new Premium Economy class when, on February 2, the airline encouraged its Facebook and Twitter followers to solve a picture puzzle on the airline’s Instagram page. The relatively simple puzzle showed only a picture of the new Premium Economy seat without mentioning what it is, only to be fully revealed a day later when the airline’s Youtube channel released a video that gave a brief tour of the airline’s new Premium Economy Class.
Starting August 9, customers traveling on select flights from Singapore to Sydney will be the first to experience the new cabin class, which will subsequently be added to the flag carrier’s A380s, 777-300ERs, and A350s servicing routes including Beijing, Delhi, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, London, Mumbai, New York, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Zurich.
Singapore Airlines worked with award-winning design firm JPA Design (starting in 2013, no less) to create two new premium-economy seats, one model for the A380 and 777-300ER and another for the A350. Each seat has a width ranging between 47 and 50 centimeters and offers a 20-centimeter recline. Complementing the seat is a 34-centimeter full-HD monitor—the largest in its class—and noise-canceling headphones. Other premium touches include full leather finishing, calf-rests and foot-bars, in-seat power supplies, two USB ports, personal in-seat reading lights, cocktail tables, and additional stowage for items like water bottles, mobile phones, and laptops.
Food and beverage options are also more extensive for Premium Economy Class passengers. Beside being able to select from a standard menu with three meal options, passengers can select the Premium Economy “Book the Cook” service starting April 2015, which lets them pre-select their main course prior to flying. Topping it off, champagne will be offered in addition to a selection of curated wines throughout the flight.
