The Luxe List 2012, Thailand: Okura Prestige, Bangkok

Occupying the top floors of a futuristic tower on the corner of Wireless and Ploenchit roads, Okura Prestige marks the Southeast Asian debut for Japanese hotel group Okura. The 240 guest rooms, which start at 43 square meters, exude sophistication and style with beige and buckskin-cloth walls, sliding doors hiding minibars and walk-in closets, and bathrooms with deep tubs and dazzling views over the city.

In contrast, the moody lobby on the 24th floor is marked by large swaths of veined charcoal marble and a giant bamboo installation by Thai artist Korakot Aromdee. Dining at Yamazato, an outlet of the Okura group’s chain of smart kaiseki restaurants (the Amsterdam Yamazato has a Michelin star), is a must: under a ceiling that mimics origami folds, waitresses in royal-blue kimonos ceremoniously present delicate portions of grilled eel, egg custard, and tempura shrimp on earthenware crockery and black-lacquer trays. The cantilevered 25th-floor swimming pool is another highlight.

57 Wireless Rd.; 66-2/687-9000; okurabangkok.com; doubles from US$190.
