Passengers in Singapore’s Changi Airport can look forward to seamless boarding of flights with just a barcoded ticket from April of this year. Following successful trials with Lufthansa, the airline reported reduced boarding time and the on-time departure of its aircraft. According to Changi Airport, the new system allows passengers to board planes up to 50 percent faster by simply scanning a barcode at boarding gates. Now a fully-loaded A380 aircraft with a passenger load of 500 can be completed in 15 minutes, from about 30 minutes previously. The gates will be introduced in common gatehold rooms in all three terminals from April, 2014 along with additional automated features such as self check-in and bag drops. For the technology-challenged passenger, gate attendants will still be on hand for assistance.
