The Luxe List 2014: Mira Moon, Hong Kong, China
With a fairytale design theme, Secret Garden lounge, and in-room cocktail treasure chests, the latest player in the rapid revitalization of Wan Chai is a whimsical newcomer to this former red-light district. But kitsch it is not. The 91-room hotel is the first project by nascent hotelier Martin Lee, and with it he entrusted creative reign to international design team Wanders & Yoo, who took the once drab office tower and transformed it with a lavish interpretation of the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival’s ancient legend. Rabbit motifs are carved in latticework wood walls and embroidered into hanging lanterns; peonies weave through corridor carpeting and bathroom tile mosaics. Local fashion designer Grace Choi has dressed the staff in custom chinoiserie, while Spanish chef Guillermo Delavault’s Chinese-Spanish fusion food is worth a night in from the city’s vibrant restaurant scene. The only thing missing here is a spa, though in-room massages are just a phone call away.
